Car accidents are complex events, which often happen when you least expect them. In even a minor crash or collision, the injuries you suffer can end up being severe. At Arami Law, we defend the rights of injured victims in seeking compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages, and other costs incurred from at-fault drivers. The following are four ways in which car accidents in Chicago often occur.
According to the National Safety Commision (NSC), there are often multiple factors that cause a crash to happen. Adverse weather and heavy traffic often play a role, as do reckless driving behaviors, such as speeding, distracted driving, and disregarding traffic signs or signals. In an effort to try and prevent crashes, researchers have identified the four most common types of car accidents:
These are the most common type of crash, in which one driver slams directly into the back of another. More than 40% of all car accidents are rear-end collisions, which often result from not paying attention or from aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating and failure to yield. Statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) indicate that close to 100,000 rear-end collisions occur throughout the state each year.
Another common type of collision, these occur when one driver brushes against the side of the other, often causing both cars to spin out of control. They can result from weaving in and out of lanes, such as when drivers are distracted or under the influence, or due to improper passing. IDOT reports that each year there are over 30,000 of these car accidents in the state.
These occur when one driver slams directly into the side of another, often as the result of running a red light or disobeying traffic signals. Impacting as many as 50,000 drivers each year, these have the potential to cause debilitating and potentially life-threatening injuries.
While one of the least common types of car accidents in Illinois, impacting fewer than 3,000 drivers each year, head-on collisions are among the most potentially deadly. They can occur in intersections, highway exit ramps, or on one-way streets, where drivers fail to pay attention to traffic signs or signals. Alcohol is often a factor in these crashes, as is drowsy driving and falling asleep behind the wheel.
